Vox Camerata is a non-profit registered society which aspires to be a centre of advocacy, discovery, learning and practice for choral music making in Singapore and a bridge between communities locally, regionally and internationally. Since our inception in 2004, we have held on to two fundamental values. The first is that everyone, irrespective of their background and ability, should be given opportunities to participate in a choir. Secondly, we strive our utmost to make good music. We see these twin beliefs as two sides of the same coin, held together by a practice of teaching, mentoring and nurturing as a community.

At the end of 2019, Vox Camerata had the opportunity to reassess its role in the wider arts community. Using the SG Arts Plan (2018 – 2022) as a framework, we saw that there is a lack of capacity for advocacy and research within the choral music sphere(s). While the Vox Camerata Community Choir continues to be the heart of the society, embodying the best of our mission and values, we have also expanded our activities to encompass new areas of professional and community development. For example, 2021 saw the formation of Vox Llinette, a professional choir that plays a vital role in the interventions enacted by Vox Camerata to rejuvenate Singapore’s choral music sector.

Looking ahead, Vox Camerata hopes to transition from a non-profit into a charity, the greater institutional strengths of which would enable us to better serve the wider choral music community. To that end, the society is in the midst of a yearlong organisational transformation to develop its institutional processes and expand its organisational headcount. The board of directors will ensure that good governance is practised, operationally as well as artistically, and that we will eventually be worthy of said charity status. We welcome members of the public, even those without a music background, to join us in our efforts to advocate for the choral music scene in Singapore and make our country a more conducive home for the arts.

Vox Camerata

Sun Boxi

Conductor

Sun Boxi began his musical journey with the Victoria School Choir in 2011, where his interest in choral music was first piqued. He then continued to sing in the Victoria Chorale and The Vocal Consort, under the direction of Mr Nelson Kwei. His many years as a chorister have inspired him to seek a bigger role in musical leadership, and this has led him to take up conducting as a vocation.

His first experience in conducting began in The Vocal Consort, where he led the choir in select carolling sessions from 2015-2019. In 2020, he joined Vox Camerata as the Assistant Conductor, in a further pursuit on the path of music direction. Under the tutelage of Dr. Shahril Salleh, he led Vox Camerata’s community choir in his concert conducting debut in Adventure! 2021, where the choir performed a diverse selection of European sacred music.

Samantha Wee

Conductor

Samantha’s journey in choral music began in primary school, when she joined her school choir. Since then, she has sung in numerous choirs, a cappella groups, and musicals. These experiences have also given her numerous opportunities to pick up new skills, such as beatboxing and arranging music. Samantha currently sings with Vox Camerata's Community and Chamber Choirs, as well as with The Graduate Singers, a semi-professional choral ensemble.
